5 Things to Look for in a Contractor

The homeowner/contractor relationship is an important one. You’ll be inviting someone into your home to redesign the space you return to each evening to spend time with family. This is someone you’ll need to fully trust and be able to clearly communicate with. Indeed, it is important to get this one right. Here are five things you should be on the lookout for when selecting a home design contractor.

1. Contractor’s License

First and foremost, it is important to find a contractor who is licensed. The contractor must have met the state mandated qualifications set forth.

2. General Liability and Workers Comp Insurance

Another must-have for contractors is general liability and workers comp insurance. Their policy must protect you from incurring responsibility if there is an injury on your property.

3. Solid Experience

To ensure that the contractor can provide you with top notch craftsmanship, it is important that he or she has a solid track record of good experience. Ask them how long they’ve been in business and how long it generally takes for them to complete projects.

4. Positive References

A positive reputation online with good references lets you know the company has completed projects to the customer’s liking. However, watch out for too many perfect reviews — a 100% rating could mean the reviews are not from actual customers.

5. Well-trained Crew

Be prepared to ask what licenses or training people on the contractor’s crew have received. In addition, ask how long the company has been in business and if it has faced challenges, as it relates to crew, in the past. When hiring a contractor, it is crucial to perform due diligence. Just by asking a few simple questions, you can take a step toward a better home renovation experience.
